My hubby has had his Class A for awhile, but due to a previous prison sentence..... drove dumptrucks and whatnot.
He FINALLY was accepted by a big OTR company, and I know we have or had some truck drivers on here.
He's doing his training with another driver for the next few weeks...
Any advice for him from some of the old salts that I could pass on...?
Stuff to watch out for from the companies, etc, truck stop trickery...thanks in advance.
BTW~
I'm still looking for band members in the Atlanta, North Georgia area!
 Kim

Lot Lizards have STD's.
I use to have a dim (green red or blue)glowing light down by my feet - just barely in sight to help me stay awake..if I found myself tracking the tail lights in front of me, I would look down at my light to change my perspective. Co-drivers are good company - talk on the radio a lot, sing outload and just be a total ass lol
Sleep is the only cure to OTR long trips - everyone tries to get in more than 14 hrs a day - few can manage and keep their health very long. Take many quick naps on the side road when fatigued - better to rest 20 mins and make it than to pull straight and kill yourself and anyone around ya.
Like Eric said above..Stay away from the LA turn arounds...white cross's etc etc

Thanks, he left for orientation yesterday, and he goes on the road with a trainer starting Friday.
The terminal was in Spartanberg,SC, not too horrible of a drive for me to come back after dropping him off. Our daughter was good about it, she says she misses him, but loves the big trucks.
He was told to watch out for pickpockets, dealers, lot lizards, and avoid letting the truck stops rip you off, too.
He only has to go as far west as the midwest, down towards Mexico, and up by Canada. He doesn't get to go to Cali with this company!....
Thanks for the info!.....................Kim

Well that's not so bad, that drive in and out is awful - and btw, LA turn arounds is another term for Speed - you take a hit, and it's good enough to get you to LA and back before you crash and burn! haha But ya...deadheaded back from Cali sucks when you're alone - there's a lot of CB chatter out there for sure cause everyone is trying to stay awake - there's nothing out there. At least it's getting a bit better - seems like getting to Barstow is faster now *shrug*

Also, tell him not to tap his foot... apparently that will lead to him getting SUM KILLER HEAD.
The graffitti in those places is pretty disturbing.

it is so embarrassing when we are out on the highway. If you only knew

 Kimlong haul is a lonely life. good money from time to time, but lonely. it's hard on the family at home. try to remember that it just a job and that he'll be home when he can. patience is important for both parties in an OTR family.

Thanks...he did a year in the gray bar hotel in another state about 7 years ago, that has toughened me up.........now, not back when it happened, though. I thought my life was over, but I was in my 20's back then and getting near 40 has made me have the patience of a saint....mostly!
