So, right now in Chicago we are hitting our peak of the 17 year cicada invasion. For those that dont live in places that get them, for 17 years, giant ugly cicadas live underground in their premature state. Then once every 17 years they come up, mature, mate, and die. Northern Illinois has the biggest brood in the country, and we are entering week 2 of the invasion. That means the fuckers are EVERYWHERE. If you stand outside for more than 5 minutes here, you will have like 12 of them perched on you making their mating calls, which by the way are super loud when 50 million mating pairs within earshot are calling all at once. I am going to go on a hypnotic rage soon if they dont shut the fuck up. Before they came up this yea, I was all excited. I hadnt seen them since I was 6. But now I hate the fuckers.

When I was in Texas like 10 years ago or more they had them fucking everywhere. I couldnt even sleep they are so damn noisey. I fuckin hate the things.
Do all of them wait 17 years? Seems like in Texas they are there like every summer.

there's the annual ones, and there are cyclical ones. the annual ones are kept in check by wildlife, but the cyclical ones lie dormant for so long they pretty much mature in biblical proportions, or that's how i understand it.

Bingo. Yeah, we have annual ones too, but not in this number. In undeveloped areas, i heard these things are coming up at more than 2,000,000 per acre. Even in the city there are about 20,000 in every tree.

How long does it last? I don't know if I'd leave my house for the duration. I am such a girl about bugs.

4-6 weeks. One of the worst parts is that they attract swarms of sea gulls that shit everywhere.

between my hatred of bugs and overwhelming fear of seagulls... I would DEFINATELY not leave the house. Or I'd go on a 4-6 week vacation somewhere delightful like CT. We don't have those horrible things around here.

seems like it, ha?

Oh their there. All up in Edison Park and Park Ridge and shit! I was really hoping the fuckers would bombard the wedding last weekend, and maybe land all over you and BLT! I remember them being worse, the last time.
Ryan's right though, it's the damn Sea Gulls pooping on everything that makes it worse.

I hated them 17 years ago, I hate em now. I still remember standing outside back then with a baseball bat winding up and cracking them out of midair.
Any time I see one if it doesn't fly away in time: Game Over.
On Memorial Day I was at a friend's house and happened to see at least 100 of them coming out in the same area, It looked like some sci-fi shit, kinda turned my stomach. We taped a bunch to bottle rockets and launched them, that was the only good thing that has come out of this shit. As for the seagulls, I've never been so happy to see those damn sea rats in my yard.
In conclusion, Fuck Cicadas.

Well, I am here to fucking report that I still haven't seen one goddamn fucking Cicada...I'm starting to think they are like the famous Long Beach Grunion runs. Nevertheless, I have my Hibachi ready to roast those fuckers so I can stick them in some corn tortillias with hot sauce...if they ever show up that is....
