A new film bio,has just come out in the UK about Mr Strummer called Joe Strummer,The future is Unwritten.[cert 15....125 min]
This illuminating film[5 star rating]by Julien Temple ,uses cocert footage, and tapes of his radio appearances, plus affectionate tributes from the likes of Bono, and Johnny Depp, to construct a compelling portrait of a great artist, and unrepentant idealist.

I met Joe,,when he was singing for the pogues ,at the Upper Canada brewery in Toronto.Must say,he was a true gent.
I read a few months back, that after eveyone had taken there slice ,his wife was left with 2 million pounds ,not a lot when you think about it.

This Sufi I once worked with told me that he heard another Sufi proclaim (while listening to "Rock the Casbah")that Joe Strummer had written that song after hanging out with them and becoming one himself. Was Joe Strummer a Sufi?

So its true that the Clash were a good bunch of extremely tasteful/talented well off art student guys who cashed in on the beauty of angry proletarianism.

Haha - if they were unemployed, it's because they didn't want to work. If they lived in squats, it because they chose to. They had choices that others of their generation, and later ones, didn't...
Edit - and sang of having no choice.

His old man a squaddie, an insurance agent and then run a boo shop. His mum was a librarian. Until they split up.
I just don't think they were the underdogs they made themselves out to be. They were all intelligent people... unlike the pistols.

Well, not thick. But with his childhood/background you couldn't see him in a 9 to 5.
And, going back to the Clash, Topper's the son of two Primary school head teachers. So there's hardly a maelstrom of proleteriat angst, there either.
