Ok, I hate to sound ignorant, but does anyone have any good tips on knife sharpening? My brother showed me the process years ago, but for some reason, I dont get results.

it really does matter what kindof sharpener you use, there are stones you have to know what your doing and there are knife sharpeners that are pretty much self explanatory. but i find most knife dealers, hunting shops and farmers market martial arts stores will sharpen your knife for like five bucks. they know what they are doing and they usually put a nice long lasting edge on it. also it helps to have a decent knife that holds an edge, theres no sense in polishing a turd.

go buy a lansky kit, it has all the guide bars. depends on what you're doing with the knife, 20degrees is an all around good angle. get your angle then hit it with a sharpening steel.

A mate swears by the wet stone but just grinds his knives down. I use a steel. Every time you're going to use a knife, a couple of strokes on the steel. Little and often.
Have a word with your butcher - he should show how to keep an edge.

Ill have to head to the bass pro shop and look around at what they have. I am polishing a cheap knife, but, its kept an edge for a good while.

whetstones are hard to use until you get the hand of it. I would recommend going to a knife store or hardware store and getting it sharpened on a grind stone and then regularly keeping it sharp with the whetstone. if you want to use your whetstone, try this:
Knives
The most common tool for sharpening knives is a whetstone, which usually has both a medium/coarse side for initial sharpening and a smoother side for fine honing. To use a whetstone, spread a thin film of oil over the side you're using. Then press the blade of your knife against the stone, holding it at about a 30-degree angle, and draw it along the whetstone to sharpen it. Be sure to sharpen both sides of your blade evenly.

didn't look at the other posts (sorry). But The ceramic sharpeners are great. If your knife has a coating they are especially great. You can get them at home depot, or just about any army/navy store.
