I remember going in to work that morning like it was yesterday, everybody gathered around the t.v. in shock... 9/11 changed everything. My deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the servicemen and women that died trying to rescue them...

I woke up to my buddy kicking my bedroom door and yelling, "The bastards have hit us! You gotta come see this!"

I also get choked up a little bit when I see them in an old movie. When I was living on Manhattan, I remember one night they turned on gigantic spotlights aimed at the sky where the Towers used to be. I could see the beams shining straight up from my window. That was pretty saddening.

I remember being so sad at the loss of life and so fucking angry at the terrorists in the coming days, the anger hasn't faded and neither has the sadness,

I couldnt even begin to understand your sorrow or feel how mad you must have been until we had the July 8th attacks and i was so distraught i just sat there crying at work and worrying about two of my friends who travelled on that line to work, one of my friends was hospitalised and the other was fine.

I agree never forgive, never forget and just remember them with pride.

I was working from home and had the TV on next to me with CNN running.

It was with a total disbelief as the whole tragedy was played out over the following hours. I saw the first tower collapse behind a newsreader who for some time just couldn't come to terms with the fact that such a creation could disappear into dust.

A fitting tribute for 'Hoon to publish all the names on here and a reminder if one were needed of the scale and wanton barbarism of the mass murder.

On the flip side, the scale of the heroism displayed is my abiding memory.

No words can describe how awful that day was, everybody in New York was just walking around dazed...groups of people standing around confused, angry, crying...

I still habitually look up to get my bearings in lower Manhattan by spotting the Towers, the blank bit of skyline is a constant reminder.

Manhattan today is oddly quiet as well.

i took in the beautiful view of the nyc skyline that day on my way to work, as i always did. my commute was an hour, from up by the george washington bridge down to red bank. there's something beautiful about the sun coming up over the buildings, reflecting off the glass and turning the city into a shimmering jewel. this day was no different, and in hindsight, was even more beautiful than usual. the sky was unusally clear and the reflections of the sun were even more radiant.

i had just gotten settled in at work and ready to go out on my calls for the day when one of my co-workers calls me and says to turn on the radio because some jerkoff in a cessna or something just flew into one of the towers. we had a good laugh and wondered how someone could be so stupid, or if there was some weird mechanical failure or whatnot.

i was in my truck when the second plane hit. that's when i realized something big was going on. i rang the bell of my first call and was greeted by a sobbing woman. her husband worked on one of the top floors. i stayed with her for a bit, then left when friends and relatives started calling.

in my truck on the way to the next call, the first tower fell. i felt like someone had just removed all major organs and there was just a blank cavity left and had to pull over to compose myself. my second call was answered by a wailing woman who's husband worked in the tower that had just fallen. needless to say, i stayed with her for a bit until the neighbors came over and the phone calls kept coming.

the rest of the day was the same.......i was not a locksmith, i was an impromptu grief counselor. everything was a blur. my entire day was spent holding back the tears because i felt that i needed to be strong for these people. i have never experienced such genuine anguish ever in my life, and it was all i could do to keep it together. the images were surreal, and i could not believe they were actually happening.

my bosses called me back to the shop around 2:30. when i got there, i found out that the second plane had flown into my cousin's office, and there was no word from him, or from his father who worked across the street. i called home to find out what was going on and found out that a very close friend of the family worked in an office above where one of the planes hit. i still managed to keep it together somehow. (luckily, everyone i knew made it out ok. i wish i could say the same for others.)

i was finally sent home around 3, and once i rounded the the bend of the eastern spur of the NJ Turnpike and saw the giant column of smoke where those two shimmering, majestic edifices should have been, i lost it. completely. i pulled over, bawled like a little baby, and felt compelled to destroy something, anything that would make this nightmare go away. i still feel that way to this day, and probably will until i die. i have been told i'm 'touchy' about this topic. you're goddamn right, i am. i know what i went through, and that pales in comparison and i cannot possibly fathom what the people who were actually in those towers and involved with the rescue/recovery had to go through.

may the victims forever rest in peace, may the rebuilding go smoother than it has so far, and may those behind this massacre die slow, painful, and horrible deaths and what little souls they have be eternally reincarnated as the most foul and vile of beings.

I was in 11th grade, I has signed up for the military over summer break. I knew where I would be heading in a few years. My teacher's daughter worked at the pentagon, but some how she kept he composure. My cousin and her husband, who had actually just gotten married about a month before, they were at the pentagon that day too. So I was worried sick. I remember just having a sick feeling, like I wanted to puke, and it stayed with me for days. I still remember the numb feeling I had, and the onyl thing that made me have that same feeling again was being in Iraq in the middle of action. I knwo its probably not healthy but I get so pissed when I see stuff on the day of 9/11, even though theres nothing I can do about it, I just wanna go out and break some heads. So I try not to watch stuff on Tv to do with it. I feel for all the families of those who passed on that day and continue to because of the events of 9/11.

I was in 9th grade, just waking up before school and I turned on the news and I couldn't fucking believe it. I'm pretty sure I had my hand over my open mouth for like 10 minutes until the second plane hit. Watching that that happen..damn, I will never be able to get that image out of my head. All day at school in every class, we just watched the news. It hurts my heart just thinking about that day. You know, when they mention the casualties and deaths as a number, it's not as personal, shocking yes, but once you go through every name of every person. It's breathtaking.

Nothing but respect for everyone who lost someone and most of all, those who lost their lives. They will most definatly never be forgotten.

New York's Fighting 69th Infantry is the only combat arms unit on Manhattan. They were the first military to arrive and secure Ground Zero. A lot of my friends got there on foot, running through the streets of New York in uniform. Others smartly reported to the armory and were taken to Ground Zero in an orderly fashion, and with proper weapons (although they refused to issue ammunition. I think because they were concerned that they would shoot the first Arabic looking person they saw). The sad thing was that many of them were completely unable to get a cab to stop for them, because they saw the uniform and knew where they were headed.

The 69th armory was a family grief center and they still have a display of many of the missing person fliers which were hanging up all over the building.

Things always get pretty quiet at the armory around 9/11, and the usually jovial Tuesday night in the Garryowen, the armory bar, becomes more somber. They often swap 9/11 stories around that time. I'll never forget watching a normally tough as nails infantryman crying like a baby while he told me about finding a woman's foot in a shoe. He knew it was somebody's mom, sister, and daughter.

When I moved to NYC, and I had to choose a new unit, I joined them. My wife had specifically told me not to join them because I was an Air Defense Artilleryman, so I was just as qualified for the finance unit as I was for the infantry etc. When I came home and told her I had joined the Fighting 69th she cried, because I had just gotten done with a deployment that almost landed me in Iraq. My argument that an Irish-American in NYC has to join the 69th did not seem to console her.

Since that time the Fighting 69th has completed their tour in Iraq and sadly lost 19 KIA in Baghdad. I will always love the 69th.

This is why i want every gut wrenching bit of footage to never be held up for criticism as to whether or not it should be aired.

I've been listening to a lot of the original broadcasts of that day today. How viewpoints change! So many hypocrites.

NYC was MY city.. MINE. Just like i'm sure every other person that lives in the tri-state area feels. To not see those towers peeping out in the distance as I drive different roads is a still a slap in the face 5 years later. I can not get used to it.

Earlier this summer I took my kids down south st. seaport. We took the SI ferry. So many childhood memories on that ferry and seeing the towers there I remember staring and staring at them when I was little. This time around no towers. It wasn't like I was expecting them but as I was standing on the deck with the accordian fence across the bow, with my kids, wind whipped, flying across the bay and no fuckin towers, I got as angry as I did the day they went down.

May NO ONE ever ever forget.

May those who died rest in peace.
May those who live mourning those who passed have the comfort of knowing the world is there for them to shed a tear on their shoulders.
And those who harmed the ones lost that day..may they never have peace and may they have a thousand horrors befall them.

The day it happened I spent with my family, around the television. The day after that, buying supplies to send to NYC to help out in the only way we could. Each year on this day, just never feels quite right. I think everyone also feels the same.Even a great day..not so great when you remember the date.

Tragedy is indeed a part of life, but that does not mean we should trivialise the loss of life, or callously shrug our shoulders if somebody wants to remember the lost. How do you propose we change the attitudes of radical Moslems? Shall we send them hand written notes saying that we love them and understand why they slaughtered thousands of civilians and that we want to have a group hug with them?

We were living on post at Fort Campbell and the post literally locked the fuck down for days........no food delivery,no school,no PX open, only the E/R was open.......you couldnt get on without valid ID and a MAJOR inspection of your car so the lines were so long guys who lived Off Post were walking ......

We went to Threat Con Delta (highest security level)and had Armed Humvees parked on every block in housing(My kids and I would bring them food and water) and regular sweeps by Apaches (they flew so low that my kids,on their swingset in the backyard, could wave and the gunner could wave back)overhead......My husband and his Unit got to guard my Sons school for like 2 weeks......they were set up in front of the school...it was crazy(My husband couldnt come home but I could visit him 2 blocks away in front of the school).........it was just fucking surreal (we then had some crazy incidents happen on or around post that were scary and I really thought someone would try to bomb Post which wasnt so far fetched Id later learn).

All I did was watch TV nearly 24/7 and cry while I waited for my Husband to deploy..........(and hed just reinlisted 3 weeks prior!!!)

(side note: When it first became apparent it was a terroist attack I thought it was a more elbaorate Oklahoma City type attack and it was some wacky "Aryan" organization involved....I was surprised when it wasnt!)

I was delivering a small shipment with a coworker and we both thought that it was a freak accident as lot of people did. We couldn't get decent news on the truck radio and we were getting occassional updates from the shipper we were delivering to. when the second plane hit and we found out that it wasn't some small prop plane but a jumbo jet, I got really nervous. We got our job done as fast as we could and went home early. I spent about three days glued to the tube. I thought is was the coming of the apocalypse. I was scared and really pissed off. My prayers go out the the families of the victims.

i remember i woke up that morning to see chicago's mayor daley on the news with a small video in the upper corner of a building getting hit by a plane. i didn't have my glasses on and being half asleep i thought chicago had been attacked. i'll never forget scrambling for my glasses thinking if chicago got hit i gotta get ahold of my friends that work up there. when i realized it was new york, i kept waiting to hear that chicago got hit next. one of those scenarios you just don't want to think of but do. i think i just stared at the news channels all day kinda shocked and more pissed that these cowards would do that to innocents.
what pisses me off even more now is people seem to forget the severity of this tragedy and what these coward terrorists want to do to us. they wanna treat these scumbags nicely and they put our own soldiers in jail for fucking with them, while westerners get their fucking heads chopped off. i don't see any muslims up in arms over some "infidels" getting fucking slaughtered.

Came across this on another site I post on, pretty tough to watch and hear. If this in not an approriate post here, mods feel free to delete it.

You know, I promised myself I wouldn't cry this year. I was doing really well right up until I watched that.

I seriously hope the fuckers that did that are roasting right now.

There is never shame in tears over this event.

And if there is any justice in the Universe, they are in more torment than can be expressed in words.

May the responsible be found and brought to justice. And ripped to bits by rabied dogs.

Not sure it's the right place to mention, but I seen the documentaries about the 9/11 on the science channel, today and yesterday, and a perticular had caught my eye which can be viewed here: www.loosechange911.com (http://www.loosechange911.com) which makes me ponder wether the US and the world safer now, or perhaps a lot less?

Honestly, it does hit you right in the gut. It hard to listen to because your heart goes out to the guy, you know he is going through hell and can't do anything to help. Even years later it is still like it happened yesterday, the wounds are still fresh...

May all the victims rest in peace and may their families know justice.

But I fear that too many people have started to distance themselfs from that day and in some places it's bussiness as usual. I believe that 9/11 should be made a National Holiday in the US and in Canada.

i was driving home last night and there's a great view of nyc from right near my house. i didn't see the lights at first and got really pissed thinking someone forgot to do it. as it turned out, the angle i thought i should be able to see them from wasn't where i remembered it was and they were there in all their splendor once the skyline came into view. i almost lost it when it did come into view.

I was kinda bummed that from Astoria, the cloud cover last night was such that you couldn't see the beams of light. They did light up the bottoms of the clouds tho, so you knew what was under that bright spot in the sky.

Freaks me out every year that on 9/11 they DON'T light the top of the Empire State Building. Only day of the year it's not lit.

Interesting. I guess they lit it for the 5th anniversary. Usually the ESB is lit from sundown until midnight.

Last year and the year before both times I remember glancing up at it, just out of habit and seeing it all black. Stopped me in my tracks, I'll tell ya.

thaat's probably it. now that you mention it, i remember it being dark in past years as well. didn't notice it too much as the eye was naturally drawn to the lights.
