Don't worry, not as sick as the title might lead you to believe. Last night I got way too drunk and somehow got on the topic of Colin Powell.

Now I've known a lot of Colins and Collins over the years, and their names are always pronounced the same as "Callin'." Why does Colin Powell insist on being called "Colon?" Is it some sort of dialect thing from wherever he's from? It makes no sense to me, as he could very easily have switched the pronunciation so he's not named after a part of the rectum.

As far as I know this has never been addressed, although I'm sure at some point it's been used by late-night talk show hosts for a cheap gag. It really shouldn't be weirder than a man calling himself Dick but somehow it gets under my skin because nobody ever seems to acknowledge the innuendo.

From the Washington Post:

Powell's parents, Jamaican immigrants and subjects of the British empire, pronounced their son's name KAH-lin. But Powell's childhood friends in the South Bronx, impressed by the heroic exploits of World War II flyer Colin P. Kelly Jr. (known as KOH-lin), altered the pronunciation and its been KOH-lin Powell ever since.

So then the next question is what were Colin P. Kelly Jr's grandparents thinking?
