Carpenters To Be Exact
I am a soon to be journeyman in the Carpenter's Union and I am looking to relocate to a city that:
A. Has a Local that is working
B. Has a good Music Scene
C. Is Warmer or Cheaper than Boston
So ya i know there are Unions out in Cali and Vegas that are constantly working but I was thinking about some place down south... If you guys got any info Let me know.
This will be probably this time Next year.

Didnt you make a thread like this awhile ago about a union for something else, like a bricklayer, and before that, something else?

No The one that I made before was I got into the Carpenters and I am going through the Apprentiship... are there any other Union Brothers and Sisters out there...
And then a bunch of people replied talking about which union they're in.

I'v been a union electrican for 8 yrs now in local 613 Atlanta, GA and turned out in 04'. I was a pre-apprentice up in local 313 Wilmington, DE for 9 months, but moved down here in 99'. I wished I woulda joined up there though. Even though I can travel all over it ain't the same. Other than me bitching about where I joined I'd still recomend everybody to join a union and getting good training in a trade that they can take anywhere they go.
As for Atlanta the carpenter union is very small. I'd recomend stay out west or up north where unionism means something. Congratz by the way for doing the right thing and turning out.

What exactly is a "journeyman"? I know nothing about unions, except for the fact we can't have'em in NC. I've been doing trim carpentry for about 4 years now, and never had an "apprenticeship". I guess that would just mean you were a nailer/gopher/ bitch, right? I mean, I had to do all of those things to become a cutman, but then again, you can't just let some dumb-ass guy start choppin' up fine wood if he can't even read a tape measure.

It's just a title... when you are in the Union you apprentice for 4 years some people are less... it's like going up a pay grade in the Military. Journeyman is making the most money that's really it... and the Union has confidence in your skills to the point that they could send you to any job for any skill.

don't know if richmond va. has any unions but i do know that there is plenty of work to be found as a carpenter there. i'm going down next monday to take care of some stuff. i'll ask a buddy about it.
the music scene there is soso. plenty of places to drink for cheap and the rent aint bad there either. but theyre alot of stinky crusty punk types everywhere and a shit ton of hippyesque punching bags walking about too.
as for skins, most are inbred wp rejects that couldnt organize a piss up even if they worked at the brewery providing the beer.
but you are close to va. beach and dc and can see some good shows from time to time as long as youre willing to travel an hour or more.
the local HC is ok, but then again, i've been told im a snob when it comes to HC....
i'll keep ya posted if you'd like......:hippy:
