It's been my experience in the past that the relationship between punks and skins is not always amicable. For the most part the scenes have been intertwined, and for obvious reasons. But in a few places I've been the two groups have been quite seperate, and in one place in particular, in a constate state of conflict. What I'm wondering is how common it is that punks and skins clash? Does anyone live in a town where the two just plain don't get along? And if so, why not?

its not that bad in LA. the reason for it usually is because punks act like retarded fags sometimes and have no fucking manners.

Depends, I have been in some pretty nasty arguments over politics with a few, but for the most part we leave eachother alone. Theres hardly any punks or skins where I live, and 99% of the ones who do/used to live here either aren't serious about it, or communists. When I visit places like Richmond, DC, and Baltimore, people seem to get along fine, so I guess it differs from place to place.

I dont think I know a single punk who is into the whole anarchy bullshit or commie bullshit. I hang out with punks, but thats because they are in my group of friends. I think it depends on the area...this isnt a huge area, so...
I'd still hang out with those guys anyway.

I was just talking with a friend of mine about this subject and he brought up a few reasons he's seen for division. The first is boisterousness. Some of the punks we both know (mostly crust punks) tend to be be more intellectual (or psuedo-intellectual) and see skins as bieng brutish, or "jockish". As such they're either intimidated, or view themselves as superior. Personally, I consider that ideology to be no more than ignorance and arrogance. In the same vein, we've known a few kids that assume all skins are prejudice in some fashion, most commonly seeing them as either nazi's or "fence-walkers". Which to me seems pretty hypocritical coming from a scene that prides itself on bieng open minded.
But the one source of conflict we found to be the most commonplace is simple disagreements. Just one punk having an opposing view or idea with one skin, bieng unable to settle it, and then involving others until it snowballs into a rift between scenes.

Where I am now there's hardly a differentiation, although most of the Korean skinheads have gone off in their own gangsta route lately as discussed in another thread.
In my hometown skinheads get the usual blame for everything. Not so much accusations of racism from punks, so much as excessive violence. Which is strange because usually there are a few skinheads working security at punk events. And of course when punks need muscle, who do they come to?

i think it depends on their politics per se. if their left-wingers or commies then they tend to be idiots, i should state the ones ive encountered. whereas the right wing chaos punks tend to be more like skins but with a different dress code.
I'd sooner stab myself in the eye with a fork than hang out with 95% of the punks I've met in my life for more than 5 minutes, but then I'm sort of "jockish".

I saw a pretty cute girl the other day when I was out to eat with a different girl, she was a punk and had potential. We sorta left at the same time and she got into a Lincoln LS with rims and tint. haaa haaa

I started calling them "intelli-punks". think they seen it all from living in the Cities and super intelligent from going to college. and all the dumb cunts could do was regurgitate what their Prof's said or what they read in a fucking book. no intelligent thoughts of their own.

sadly, most punk or even metal(ish) shows in richmond attract a large group of stinky fuckers. theyre arent any oi! bands at all, and anything rockin(like johnny thunders etc.) rarely attracts a crowd at all.
that new shit they call hardcore and metalcore is what sells. or frat boy rock.
most of the stinky fuckers in richmond wont say anything to you if youre a skin, theyll pretty much just stare at you in amazement. ive only been noised up by a small group and even then they were drunk and i guess feeling brave at that point.

i went to see iron cross when they played richmond years ago. it was on a thursday and only 4 people showed up. the barmaid, the soundtech, myself and 1 other dude. i was the only skin there.
towards the end of the show, these goth girls in full regalia start making their way into the club with skinhead boys chatting them up. right after iron cross finished, goth music started getting played and these skins start dancing with the goth girls.
puggs is infuriated with what he's seeing and starts mouthing off the one of the skins and almost gets into a fight with the guy. it was hilarious yet sad at the same time.

you are so full of shit... there have been many a shows at the bike lot where everyone does manage to get along... remember best friends day??... the only fight that's ever broken out at the lot was between a trad and a bonehead... with most of the bike/crust punk kids that weren't being pacifists helping the trad... and by the way the maybe your girl got mad just cause you were being a drunk prick in general and dissappeared with her smokes and beer money, not over your comments:tongue:

I've only seen clips, but I believe it. I know they killed a guy for wearing a shirt with a confederate flag on it a about a year ago. One guy claims to have a collection of Skrewdriver hats and shirts he stole from "nazis" that he and his friends beat the shit out of. There was a big story on the murder in Rollingstone, I'll try to find a link.

i was referring to an incident that occurred 2 years ago while i was out walking pass my girls house and her anti-fa friends didnt know who i was and started insulting me from the front porch. which was funny. i stopped turned around and walked straight in her house. they flipped their shit, 1 even called the cops..which is funny cuz they always said 911 was such a joke......fuckin hippies..... :crazy:

And let's not forget that they either came back as uber metal kids, or as wierd fuckin' scenester nerds in fur coats and Elton John shades. They'd come into the Rail in droves, sit three feet from us, order their well drinks and talk endless shit about how punk rock is a joke and every kid in town is a poser. And then they have the audacity to call us juvinile for kicking their table over. Although, I guess we were in the wrong for not dropping to our knees, acknowledging their obvious sub-cultural superiority and taking our verbal lashings like good little whelps.

And to top off their Toni caliber performance, they stopped playing mid-set to let that one chick read her vegan activist poetry for forty minutes. You know when someone isn't a skinhead. It's really simple. Just because you randomly decide to dress like skinhead or fuck a skinhead don't mean you're actually a skinhead. Being a skinhead isn't like being a punk, you have to meet certain standards. You're not a skinhead so I wouldn't expect you to understand. As for now, I could careless, it ain't my scene. In my town, scenes are very close. Something like maybe 100 skins, 50 bones, 1000 punks and 100 crusties at a rough guess. The punk scene's so large that there's plenty of decent people that we get along with. Skin bands always play at punk gigs.
Get's confusing though. The Exploited came recently, I was right up the front behind a Neo-Nazi who had his fist in the air yelling along to "I believe in anarchy and chaos". No you don't fucken retard.

i'm new to skinheads.net and i see that once the posts digress from the original subject the thread seems to end a few pages later. i'm pretty sure i missed the boat on this one but it's a subject i have something to say on.
most of the skins i have come in contact with have usually at one time been part of the punk scene. the pattern i've noticed is that a guy or a girl usually doesn't come strong into subculture by immediately identifying with skinhead values as most people who are skins do. with most people i've met, as with myself, you usually start out a punk rocker or a metal head and become frustrated with the people you become surrounded with. (their values and beliefs anyways)
i spent many years in the punk scene and was always turned off by crusties and all that other anarcho garbage you run into. anarchy, causes, and protest never interested me. hard work, violence, and inebriance did just fine. i never liked crass or conflict. i preferred niblick henbane and the oi! scouts. (two jersey bands that played a venue called the pipeline that i only caught the tail end of.) my boys and i could go toe-to-toe with any skinheads our age and handle ourselves just fine.
eventually i realized the true punk rock lifestyle was no way to live and i really did not have anything in common with it's ideals. i worked most of the time (or got my own money all the time) and i was never interested in politics. i wanted to be able to be proud of myself, my work, and aspire to a future with a family. i will always have a place in my heart for punk rock, but after a certain age it just wasn't reasonable. i identify with skinhead culture and live in it somewhat comfortably. extreme lifestyle's simply do not work and i learned that by spending a significant amount of time in the finer facilities of the state of new jersey. however, i'm sure with you all it probably took time to realize where you were proud and where you belonged.

It's been my experience in the past that the relationship between punks and skins is not always amicable. For the most part the scenes have been intertwined, and for obvious reasons. But in a few places I've been the two groups have been quite seperate, and in one place in particular, in a constate state of conflict. What I'm wondering is how common it is that punks and skins clash? Does anyone live in a town where the two just plain don't get along? And if so, why not?
I liked sleeping with their girlfriends when I was younger...does that count as a form of punk-skinhead unity?

Perhaps at it's inception. I'd say there was a lot of room for interpetation there, especially in the last couple of decades.

I was never a punk, but I've known a lot of stand up people who are (some are my closest friends).. I've also met a lot of uneducated fuck-holes that got into punk because they thought it was an excuse to treat people like shit.. I judge based on the individual. (for the most part)
That goes both ways. I'm personally sick of hearing about these fucking standards. I may not look like a skin anymore but I'll always be one in my head and heart. I personally don't give a shit if that sounds sappy and most of you can drop the tough guy/girl image that you seem to project so well. I set my own standards, I don't anyone else to validate me. I said this about two or three boards ago because douschebag (sp) tried to give me shit about not staying working class because I found a good job. That's all us older folk can do? whine and bitch about the old days, Who we knew? and invalidate the younger kids coming in?
Jesus I knew there was a reason why I only posted in photo & video.

There *are* far too many people nowadays spouting off about
"I don't have to be working class or stand up for myself or keep my hair short or fight people or watch soccer or even go down to the pub for fucking beers with the boys.. I want to be an individual.. I don't need anyone to tell me blah blah blah.."
Then why still call yourself a skinhead?.. I'm not saying that you have to be sussed to the tits every day and I don't think it's about how many fights you get in on a saturday night, nor is it about your personal politics.. I also think being an individual is great, it creates a strong mind..
However, if there are no standards to live by in this way of life, then some skeezy hippie down the street could start calling himself Skinhead, couldn't he? And even if he reeeeally believed it, that wouldn't necessarily make it so, would it?..
I think that you can be something and then just stop being that thing anymore (whether or not you realize it).. When I figure that the reasons I became a skinhead don't mean much to me anymore, I will hang up my fucking boots. Period.
Those are my "standards"..
I don't know when it became cool to tear down the values of a culture we all love but I think it's bullshit..

That I agree. But when no one can agree on the standards it gets kind of pointless. Obviously there is no grand elder council of skins (Would be damn funny if there was). Those skeezy hippies are already doing it. The obly unfortunate thing is that the culture is changing. It has changed. Some of us sit around and gripe about it (I know I have). People have been tearing those walls down for awhile now.

As Pug Ugly stated I don't think you need to be sussed to the tits. To me, being a skinhead yes is a way of life, but I'm at the point in my life where I don't need to shave my head anymore or slap on my boots and braces. I sport the Fred's just because I like em. There are still ideals that I hold dear in my life.

It's been my experience in the past that the relationship between punks and skins is not always amicable. For the most part the scenes have been intertwined, and for obvious reasons. But in a few places I've been the two groups have been quite seperate, and in one place in particular, in a constate state of conflict. What I'm wondering is how common it is that punks and skins clash? Does anyone live in a town where the two just plain don't get along? And if so, why not?
I see this enough. Punks are more chaos where as skins are more order based. Punks will squat in the streets for money, looking homeless and some are. A skin has more pride in working and cleanliness.

Got to say I like most punks, but they vary from scene to scene. In Melbourne they all pretend to be queer because it's cool to be open-minded man. In Sydney they won't talk to you unless you have a leather jacket with ten million studs on it. Where I come from, t
