View Full Version : Vista freezing

I just bought a new computer and it came pre-loaded with Vista. Amongst many other problems with this OS i was wondering if anyone else is having issues with it locking up after periods of inactivity. When I come home from work the screen will still be up and the cursor will move but I can't open any programs and have to do a hard reboot. Anyone know anything about this?

huge memory resource hawg - Hope the machine is big enough to run it - Lots are under powered - need a min of 1gig ram - double if you want a normal machine from what I've seen. I refuse to run Vista myself - but I'm biased like that.

i hate it... i want to go back to NT but i am pretty computer illiterate when it comes to things like that so i don't even know how to begin doing it

NT is unsupported - XP is about as far back as you can go - problem is a lot of the new hardware being created for Vista computers can't go back to XP because they don't always have drivers for things like video/audio cards that are vista specific back in the win XP world.

MS is pushing a lot of people to MAC's and Linux...works for me! ;)

I don't have problems with the whole screen freezing so much as my mouse. Sometimes I can't get it to fucking move or it'll only move within a certain area or is really delayed..

Very lamesauce, but it came preloaded on my computer and it has some functions the other ones don't so I haven't changed it..

We;re looking at buying a laptop, so should we go with MacBook? My dad swears by Apple, but I have no experience with 'em. Would I be able to transfer my pictures & mp3's over?

Yeah, media transfers no problem. I have become a big Mac proponent in recent years.

Mac will do circles around ANY microsoft O/S when it comes to media - they were designed originally for graphic artists - they have always been superior to intel for audio/video. The hardest part about making the jump is the cash - they are a bit more expensive - no more expensive than a high end Dell, HP etc etc.. Most people skimp, and end up buying a new laptop every year or 2 yrs - I have friends with MAC's that have lasted 5+ years and still kicking ass - OS X did change that a little as it was much more robust and did mean that some people on 8yr old hardware would have to consider upgrading to get 'all' the benefits of OS-X...but come on - I have an 8 yr old intel and it won't run anything behind win98...which is why it's running FreeBSD right now - XP won't run on it - I got NT on it once, but it took 15 mins to boot up..2000 was the same. The intel's I have right now better last me, because they are going to be the last ones I get if they take XP away. Any other intel machines I buy will run Linux or BSD....

Had a test user with a similar issue here - it turned out that he had a few bad sectors on his hard drive, and the system would bog when it tried to read from that part of the drive (specifically - screensaver dll file).

Might be worth your time to run the scandisk utility and be sure to do a surface scan.

Another trick that can be used if it only happens when the machine is idle is to run the SETI@home software. When you leave the machine idle, that'll kick in (reviewing radio logs for signs of intelligent communication from outer space).

Id say Apple is easier to work with on media, but all the programs that are big for Mac are either cross platform now or something just as good works on MS stuff. Also from every benchmark i've checked out on MS/Apple I've rarely ever seen more than a very very slight difference in performance and the systems usually arent incredibly fairly matched.

Vista blows balls, its a downgrade. I'm not going to get it.

Leopard looks great...what doesnt look great are overly priced pre built machines that are hard to get into.

thanks... i read in a few places online that it a few people were having issues when using certain themes/screen savers... so i turned off the screen saver and just turn off the monitor when i get up from the computer.... and it's working just fine now

Are you on Tiger?

i have no idea.

just got a brand-spankin' new imac w/intel processor a couple of months ago. Mac OS X 10.4.11 is what i'm running. not sure if it's tiger or leopard though.

i tried to load tiger on a g4 i had and it didn't take too kindly to that. i have a g4 at home that i think is on tiger and that's working fine.

I got the xp on mine. Is there ever going to be a real need to switch to vista because all I do is use the net and listen to music?

no there is no need to switch... avoid it at all costs... the only reason i had to is because i bought a new computer and it came preloaded with vista

You may need to switch when GPU's stop supporting DX9....and I doubt any prebuilts in the future are going to come without DX10 and DX10 cards....so...use XP while it lasts.

Isn't there a hack that goes around it?

EDIT: Found it http://www.technospot.net/blogs/download-directx-10-for-windows-xp-from-alky-project/

UNless you have like 4 gigs of ram and an uber processor don't fuck with vista.

I dual boot ubuntu and xp pro. Best of both worlds.

I got a new desktop for the house a while back. It had vista preloaded. Ive found it you revert it back to looking like windows classic and turn off as many of the vista features as you can you can make it look and act for the most part like xp pro. Mydesk top has 2 gigs or ram so I havnt had any issues with it freezing up but I have had a on going issue with it automaticly hiding desktop icons you dont click on that much. Ive yet to figure out how to make it stop doing that. Even though I have checked and uncheck the setting that is suspose to stop it from happening.
