ive been thinking about buying a new bass strictly for recording. it will be strictly fender or a gibson. ive always played fenders but latley ive been feeling really comfortable when i get my hands on a gibson. any input?

I've always been particular to the Gibson "Ripper". The sound heavy as hell and tone, tone and more tone!

epiphone make some cool gibson style stuff that's a little less pricey but well put together. i have their viola bass, might be a bit brighter than what you're looking for but its the nicest bass i've ever played i think. and it sounds badass distorted.

For recording purposes homeslice get yourself a fender aerodyne jazz bass yea i know you said gibson feel nice, but trust me that jazz bass sounds amazing and plays like a dream, BTW Blood Red though Im not gonna question you like for yer Epiphone the epiphone basses are built like shit and the necks tend to warp drastically after a year or two....and if you arent feeling the Jazz bass and CAN find a Ernie Ball music man SUB get it because they own for the price for sure.

for Oi i would get a fender p bass. i own two and both of them sound great recorded.

yeah i wouldnt know to begin with, to play this thing the action is sweet as, which while its adjustable i know i've never come across something else that plays so well..but then again i've owned a few basses in the past but i'm not a bassist really so i aint no expert..

dude i would personaly kick you in the nuts if you paid 2500 for a 77 pbass. (unless it was like straight up never played)
im not exactly sure about this but from what ive seen a 76 can be bought for 1500 and so can a 78 judging by that im gonna guess a 77 can be too.
but yea definatly look for somthing like that. im not sure how great one would be for oi
but its a really cool sounding bass

i post on the harmonycentral bass forum once in a while and i was reading some guys post and he said he wasnt getting his bass untill either sept 08 or 09. i think it was 08. either way thats a long time to wait for a non-custom bass. probably be easier to find a used one

but you can get all sorts of cool tones that i guess you really have to hear to understand like your buddy said

ive heard alot about these.
the quality is somwhere between a squire and a mexican fender.
people buy them to mod.
popular stuff: badass II/III bridge, new pickups, pots, tuning pegs, whole set up, strings. pretty much everything but the neck and body.
i guess theyre alot of fun to work on and theyre cheap enough that when somthing breaks you strip em down and throw them away and buy a new one. (more or less)

Are you gonna be recording direct? Or through and amp? I find that an amp significantly changes a great majority of bass tones and unless you have a bass guitar that has tone out the wazoo you'll be better off getting something you find easy to play and nice to look at.
Personally I think there is bass guitar that records/plays like an angel, AND has one of the most distinctive sounds of all time.

I would've gotten a squier bass, either affinity p bass or vintage modified 70 p bass and replaced the pickup with a seymour duncan quarter pound p bass replacement pickup. Then you'll have a bass that you don't need to worry that much about, that has killer tone and the best thing is that they're cheap (at least compared to gibsons and Am. fender) so you can buy two and still afford to buy another one to use as backup during gigs in case string breaks, if you have to lend it to another bassist or hit someone with it etc.
just my input as a bass player.

Gibson's are made from harder woods than fender and have a muddy more mid tone, the best all a round bass i own is a rickenbacker 4003 i run stereo out put into an swr head and a 15" double folded horn and the lead pickup into a '72 ampeg v4b and 4 10 svt cab.

The white bass body my uncle started to cut out of maple and i finished it its copied from a guitar body that i saw in a cd booklet for a comp of sixties mod rock bands, the neck i bought from a used insturment store it came off some korean shortscale bass.
The pick up i stole when i was in highschool off this kids yamaha bass
and the pick up cover came off some guitar humbucker pick up that didnt work the pick guard i cut my self and the bridge is rickenbacker.
I am not exactly sure what brand the stand up is its not marked and we bought it used.

I am not exactly sure what brand the stand up is its not marked and we bought it used.
word, i bet its got a unique sound

its the same general concept as a ripper but you can slide its one pick up around. i guess it sounds alot like a fender too

Listen son, this is the internet and all, but the scene is small and one day paths may cross and I am not above beating the shit out of a high schooler who mouths off and says stupid shit without knowing who he is talking to, or what their beliefs or politics are.
