Youre uploading via FTP, and you can see all the shit on their side?

Free hosting sucks. Spam, ads, etc. Not to mention: you'll probably loose the url after a few months, years or whatever.

what do you mean? some of the stuff that got uploaded works but most doesnt. i went through my folders and took out all the spaces in the names of stuff because thats what broke the links. the folders and stuff are all fixed now but shit still doesnt work

yea its just as a test to get everything up and all that. im planning on upgrading as soon as i can get a free host to work.

Can you maybe link the site so we can take a look at the source? I'm not very good with this stuff but I know Loathe and Papa and some others are good at it.

k but be warned its not very good because even though i have ALOT of hours into it it was all done while i was learning to use the program.
ive tried bravehost, geocities, and tripod twice. the only ones that have really worked are the tripod ones.
http://bulldogspirit.tripod.com/ (http://www.bulldogspirit.tripod.com) is the first one which uploaded most of the stuff not the nav bar and most of the pics. it looks pretty shit while actualy hosted everything is more even when the nav bar actualy shows up.
http://bulldogspiritoi.tripod.com/ (http://www.bulldogspiritoi.tripod.com) uploaded the files but wont display them. i can go into the file list and see the pages and stuff. but it doest work outside of that.
im also trying to scrape together 300 bucks to buy an adobe suite from my school so that i can do this stuff from home instead of everyother day for 80 minutes at school.

they work in this post but not the other one
i know the second one doesnt work at all. asks if your the owner or somthing.
thats the one that uploaded the files but wont show the site

Now it does. I dont see anything really missing. Unless its just not showing up in the page source as broken links or whatever. Whats supposed to be there, and how are you writing this?

well in the first one its because i didnt know we werent supposed to put spaces in the names of things like page 1 should be page_1 or page1
even when i try to update that site nothing happens
thats why i made the bulldogspiritoi page
everything uploads but the shit doesnt show.
i have a theory that i forgot to put the index page in the right spot but im not sure

make sure the root directory for the website has a page named "index.htm" for starters.

yea i know that. i think i may have just not put it in the right place.
i beleive its in the pages folder instead of just the main folder for the site.
i wont be able to check untill i get to school tomorrow.
but i think that could be it.

ugh
umm, I can go over some of this with you tomorrow afternoon. My current contract rate is........ yeah yeah j/k
1st off it's hard to debug shit on the free sites because tripod rewrite all your html, css and javascript to add their own crap.
Have you comped out the look you're going for first? Something in an image format? Thats the best way I've found of doing design work, start in fireworks, image ready or photoshop, then slice the image and generate your xhtml.
Are you going for a pure css layout? I didn't look deep, but on the surface your navigation is hosed in firefox, no spacing, and I assume theirs supposed to be an image or something behind there?
Shit man, to be honest I can find you some space some place to play with that will be better than this, even if it's just a weird port on my gaming machine.

im really new to this stuff so most of what you said is going way over my head.
i tried to re-upload both versions of the site today and neither are happy at all.
http://bulldogspiritoi.tripod.com/Index.html
um not sure if youll be able to see this or if it will work or what ever. i got to it by going through my file manager but for some reason it wont come up by just going to the url bulldogspiritoi.tripod.com i dont know why.
also i fixed all the broken links but my nav bar still wont show up.
im not sure why there are no spaces or anything in the titles or names of the items.
all the nav is is photoshop images i used slicing on. so its just a bunch of .gif images that arent very happy

Well thats part of the problem there.
The easiest way to make all of your links and images show up is to set up your ftp location as a site in dreamweaver.
Once you do that you can just drag and drop elements in your page.
However, I'd suggest you download a text editor like eclipse if you actually want to learn this stuff.
WKHTL can tell you, I have designed a pretty decent course for beginner web developers and designers, it's all based off of free resources, just takes dedication to complete.

btw, your img src="" is wrong
nav1_9_08 /try1/images/nav02.gif
theres at least a space, and I'm not sure if your path is correct since I don't know the drive layout, and mappings.

I cant remember the editor I liked, but it was very simple and used good colors which you could change.
There are also some good OReilly books that you can get for pretty cheap on their website (online books)

Shit start a thread holmes, I'll start posting resources.
I can even hook up a sql server and a coldfusion server so you guys can play with some real code.
Start here:
http://www.w3schools.com/
In order:
html
xhtml
css
javascript
Come back to me after that with the exam results.
Don't bother coming back with anything below 90%. because I'll send you back to the course :)

That site is mainly about html 4.0 and earlier. If you use the W3C school you are going straight to the standards body. Honestly, developers now should be working with XHTML 1 transitional at a minimum, to keep their skill set up to date and to be standards compliant.
This will really matter if you end up working in health care, government or finance.

do you mean like instead of me making css catagories like "container" and "maincontent"
it just writes like universal code?

You haven't started those courses I recommended have you youngster? :)
No I mean formatting and validation.
Basically it adds certain attributes to the html tags to make it xhtml compliant, instead of just HTML4.
Also it's hard to read generated html because it isn't nested right.
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<title>
My Title</title>
</head><body>
Body Content
</body>
</html>
That would be a fully compliant (and well formmed, and well formatted) example.
Loathe

huh, it removed all the formatting.

i dont get it.Also, even though you did it for shits and giggles, youll want to always check both browsers to make sure it looks right. I hated that the most when I was doing this shit. I'd get something looking perfect on FF and then i'd load it on IE and shit was all over the place.

add opera and safari to the list of browsers to check against, and use a screen reader to reach an even wider audience.
Look up section 508 compliancy, and you'll do well to follow those guidelines.

im going to add some of the artwork they sent me and real content soon
as well as just making the site better looking.

the way i had it set up was just too complicated because of the ammount of images and the fact that i had them in a million different folders.
