View Full Version : Cutting Down Boots

I have a pair of 10i Docs. I want to make them about a 7i or 8i because where I work I walk a whole lot and it gets pretty hot. So I want the boots to be more "drafty" I guess you could say. And I don't want to spend more money buying more.

My question is, have any of you done this? Does it work well, or should I have them done at a leather store so they could sew them back around the ends?

One reason I'm skeptical on doing them myself is cause I don't want them to fray and tear.

I wouldn't do it if I were you. Just get a pair of 8i's or if you're broke I would maybe ask a shoemaker or whatever they're called if it can be done without fucking up the boot.

sell your 10s to get 8's

what size are you?

I'd try cutting them down with a scalpel, trim the edge with the scalpel and then rub beeswax on the edge to close it. That's how you usually do when working with leather, so I think that should do the trick.

They are cherry red polished with black to Oxblood. Only had them for a year.

Size 10us 9uk

If anyone is interested in trading, I don't really care what color, as long as they are still in good shape.

Have 2 pairs already.

I would prefer docs or grinders 8i or possibly 6i.

I had a pair of gripfast 14 eye that a roommate left behind when he moved out. Well, I think 14 eyes looks rediculous, so I cut them down to 10s. Worked great. Just took a knife and chopped em off, problem solved.

Go to a cobbler, they may even be able to put grommets by the arch like Chuck Taylor's have to breathe rather than cutting them, they won't be waterproof but don't wear your nice boots in the rain any way, thats what Salvation Army work boots are for. The place I used to work at would have done that. If you know how that kind of sole welt is sewn on get a grommet tool and do it yourself. I can't begin to explain in words how the soles on most "skinhead" type boots are sewn on and you need a special tool that looks like an awl with a tiny hook/notch thing in the end to do it but it's not hard, i did my own boots before.

I cut down some Corcoran jump boots down to 3is. Corcorans are nearly indestructible sledgehammers for your feet and can be resoled by any serious shoe repair shop. I've beat the fuck out of mine and they're still going, and if you do it right most people can't tell you didn't buy them as shoes.

I used a hobby knife to score the cut-off line and a straight razor to slice off the upper bits and trim it up.

Shit, go for it. I cut an old pair of 10 eyes down to 3 or 4 and it worked fine. They're just shit kickers but still I've had no problems
