When the bell rang it closed at a record high.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is only a measure of 30 stocks of well established companies like General Electric. It doesn't monitor the other thousands of stocks traded on various exchanges(NYSE,NASDAQ,ASE,CBT etc). The S&P 500 is an index that monitors a larger variety of stocks.
The Economy "crashing" argument has to do with trade and industrial production disparities and job losses in the industrial sector. Not stock prices, which are related to production costs and profits among other things. Large scale buyouts and lay offs actually help stock margins in many cases.

Yeah, sure, or it could just be the much more likely fact that stock prices are rising as the result of greater consumer spending which results in higher prices which will create more jobs. Stop being such a pessimist. Our economy has been in recession for 6 years now, we are due for a turnaround.

I don't know how well the economy is going to turn around when the housing market bubble bursts soon, like the dot com bubble did 6 years ago.

I'm not expert, but i'm pretty fucking concerned.... the company i work for depends on new housing development...so if they stop building houses my company takes a serious hit. Being a homeowner, and having only lived in my house for 4-5 years, i see my equitiy going down the tubes as housing prices drop. I won't be able to move until it goes back up in 5-7 years.

I'm not being a pessimist, I'm stating a fact that the Dow only monitors 30 companies that are international industry leaders....it doesn't monitor the entire economy.

The housing "bubble" isnt "bursting," the market is just adjusting after a period of ridiculous growth. Around here, houses doubled in price in a matter of 3 years.

Did I say the economy was crashing? I said the arguement FOR people that say the economy is stagnant has to do with industrial production in the United States, not the value of stocks. How did you make out in the market by the way?

You gotta look at the mortgage length on those deals too though, if people are doing short term mortgages, it's going good....if it's long term which I think a lot of people are buying, it's going to lead to higher debt loads among the homebuyers in the long run, then we'll have more reconsolidations and bankruptcies.

There are two main reasons why the Dow is up.

1 - The drop in energy prices, oil dropped $2 a barrel as it always does in election years. Known financial industry fact that big oil corps adjust oil prices in an election year to make their lobbyists and representatives look better so they will be re-elected and continue to support their energy policies.

2 - The Fed has made over 17 small increases in interest rates over the last couple of years to soften the impact of rising interest rates due to a cooling housing market. So far it looks like it has worked and consumer confidence is up.

However a record high on the Dow does not necessarily mean the economy is booming, it can also indicate that investors are worried about the war, terrorism and the many corporate financial scandals and are investing in only blue chip stocks to protect their money, thus the rise.

That's all today for Mike's Market Minute...

Why would interest rates rise due to a cooling housing market?
