Be aware and be dangerous. It's easier in a hotter conflict to stay on your game. In da stan (yeah thats gay) almost every situation you'll find yourself in has the potential of going very badly, You will be conducting long range patrols, often cut off from immediate air and ground support for days even.
Keep an eye on the news, watch the situation in Pakistan. Sr military leaders do not always see the same tings we do. However it's not that same leaders ass on the line out there.
Generally Afghanistan can be a very safe and rewarding deployment, I know it was for me. You have to bring yourself into the special operations mindset while your there though. You can't rough up villagers and expect to do passive intelligence collection there. You can't ever be the ugly American, period.
With a much lower number of American forces on the ground, each of you truly becomes a mini American ambassador, with all that entails You will need to know when soft is better than hard. When a well or some money will get you further than your weapon.
For more specific things like TTPs, points of contact, agencies, locations and maps you'll need to PM me and have some proof that you're who you say you are, you have a navy and marine corps intranet account I assume? PM me and I'll send you my AKO info.
Another thing to note. AQ/Taliban is not the only enemy there, some of the enemy are you're friends, but not as blatantly as in Iraq. They are constantly doing collection aganst you and your force protection and counter-intel guys need to be on it, need to keep you briefed, and need to do their jobs. Anything less will cost lives.
Be dangerous is the most important advice I can give. Not risky, not foolish, be aggressive and forceful. Not mean or brutal but firm and fair. The hadj respects you when you're in a position of strength.
Oh, and grow a mustache. I know they won't let most conventional troops grow beards, but regs allow you have some basic facial hair, and you will get more respect with it than without.
