OK, so 30 minutes ago I came home and went on my laptop (a POS Presario 2200 notebook) and when I went to plug in the charger it started smoking out of the back, died, then refused to turn back on. My warranty was over 2 years ago, but I just decided to try to turn it on and it worked. My fan has completely stopped working though.
Is the fan the reason it burnt out like that or is it something else? Should I just take it to Frys and have them give me the diagnosis??

Was the smoke coming out of the charger, or the computer itself?
If it was the charger (adapter) then get a new adapter unit - usually worth about $50 or so.
If it was coming out the back of the computer, the charging circuits for the battery are the most likely thing to be fried and on a machine that old, it ain't worth fixing, usually. But you can see what they have to say.

Yeah, the computer itself was smoking. Notebooks aren't THAAAT expensive. I don't know, it's an old computer and starting to slow down A LOT. I figured a new one would do the trick. But I guess it couldn't hurt to take it in. Thanks d00der.

No prob. If you're going to get a new computer, get a 2.5" USB drive enclosure, turn your old machine's drive into an external. Makes moving all your data and stuff across dead simple.

Send it to dell.
They just had a huge recall due to bad power supplies and batteries.
you're probably covered even though it's old.

I want to get it looked at just to see if it is salvagable but....my USB port in the back of my computer isn't working now either. Dubbyateeeff!? I tried uploading some pictures but that shit does not want to work. Fucking gay.

one of my batteries was like one or two numbers off from me getting a new one. pissed me off. that was the big battery too, they're too damned expensive not to get a free one.

Yeah, my brother just bought a Mac notebook, set him back about 1500 bucks. I don't like Macs...they are good if you actually do shit with them, like graphic design. I download music, go on AIM and use Firefox..I don't need a snazzy laptop, but I'd like one that does smoke and will let me upload pictures at least.
