Don't forget to wipe a big magnet over it, that always helps.

Checkdisk and defrag you can find if you right-click on your C drive and go to properties, then tools. Be damned if I can remember where Disk Cleanup is...maybe on the Start menu under Accessories -> System Tools? Something like that.

First two steps can be done in one - http://housecall.antivirus.com - free online scanner.

Just search "disc cleanup" in the help and support part of the start menu.
I run CCleaner from time to time also.Just freed up 547mb on my system with it.

fuck all the above! first save what you want to save on dvds, format hard-drive, reinstal operating system, put a good antivirus like Bitdefender Total Security 2008 [cracked, of course], and stop watching online porn from dubious sites.

AVG is no longer free as of May 31st...and will not be supported free any longer beyond that - AVAST is still free and although it's kinda flashy - it works pretty good - free license last for a year, then you just renew it again.

what the fuck is wrong with avg free? i've used it for a year and have never gotten 1 virus.
and youre bashing microsoft anti-spyware? i haven't gotten any spyware since i've started using it. anyone who thinks that a company worth hundreds of billions of dollars, that DESIGNED THE FUCKEN OS YOU USE, can not come up with a decent anti-spyware program, is a fucking idiot.
i.e. YOU. you fucking moron.

Read above again - avg is no longer free:
and:
No, you are - MS anti-spyware has been full of holes and vulnerabilities since it's release - hell, just this week half the modules of it were vulnerable to critical exploits that my company discovered which allowed someone to completely own your machine ..
* Microsoft Antigen
* Microsoft Windows Defender
* Microsoft Forefront Security
Technical Cyber Security Alert TA08-134A
I'm not saying it sucks - but it's for sure not the end all to security - and you should be very careful about giving Microsoft any credit when it comes to security - THEY SUCK AT IT! lol:eek:

DL - Spybot/Adaware. Update both of these.
Update your AV.
DL - CCleaner (hands down the best registry cleaner)
Clear shit out by running disc cleanup. Clear out cookies/cache from all your browsers. Firefox, IE etc.....
of coarse at this point you've backed up whatever pertinent files.
Boot into safe mode and run both malware progs under each log in.
check startup and make sure you're not running unnecessary progs. Good way is to look up online and type - msconfig. See what progs are running what and uncheck the bullshit you need (ex: media player updater and bullshit like that)
After running scans and clearing that shit out. Reboot one more time into safe mode and run CCleaner as well as Defrag. Defrag will not defrag running apps therefore running defrag in normal mode will only resolve shit thats not being used.
reboot and check your running apps afterwards.
treat your computer like a well oiled machine and avoid these collisions. Most people dont know shit about things hence the reason they pay "Geek Squad" $180 for a fucken "tune up" lol
It doesnt take much to make yourself a bit more knowledgeable.

Nope it doesn't. Which is why I figure after 13 years in the IT industry, I've got a bit of knowledge. :rolleyes: Same with Papaskin and several others here. Thanks anyhow.
Oh, and defrag has nothing to do with "running apps" since applications run from memory, not the drive. The only time defrag hiccups is if an app writes to the disk...which can happen just as easily in safe mode as not.

win virtual memory/linux swap partition.
Sigh. They do not RUN from swap, they get paged in/out of swap as needed. And, swap doesn't get defragged. Thanks for playing.

I have a preguntas, por favor....
This free piece of shit laptop apparently used to have Win98 on it (it has XP now) and it looks like the OS was installed like an update. It has a pretty small HD (only 20G), and I keep running out of space. When I run disk clean up, an option to delete a backup from 98 pops up. It says that you only need to keep them if you are planning in reinstalling the old OS, which I have no intention of doing (as much as I loved 98, nothing supprorts it anymore). But I am afraid that if I delete these files my computer will go kaput. These files are a huge chunk (a little over 230,000 k which is I think 230+ Mb)..
What do you guys think?
