View Full Version : Non-leather boots

Doc's stopped making their nonleather boots, and my other pair of crap payless boots (which are made of leather, ironically) are falling apart, so I really need new ones, but I would prefer not to buy any new leather if I can help it.
Does anyone know of online stores that carry Doc-esque boots made entirely of man-made materials? I checked Ebay.

Why is wanting non-leather boots so strange to you?
It's not some hippie thing, I just don't buy new leather for certain reasons.

I'm curious. What are your reasons?
1) Labeling- a lot of leather comes from China, where they do not have strict labeling policies. Cat and dog leather is not unheard of, or even rare, and it does come over here, especially in cheaper leather products. I wouldn't tan my cat to wear as shoes.
2) Fair labor- in general, companies that specialize in vegan products (mostly against the exploitation of animals for consumption) also are against the exploitation of workers. Again, I'll cite China.
Now, I know theres no way to avoid completely buying products where something was made in China somewhere along the line, but it's better to consume as little of their product as possible than to blindly consume whatever crap is put in front of you.
3) Yes, higher end leather boots generally last a long time. Yeah, synthetics are bad for the environment because they last a long time. Thats the point. They last a long time. Skin eventually rots, even with all the chemicals in the tanning process, but high quality synthetics last, except maybe through fires, which I'm not planning on walking through anytime soon.
4) I'm against anything in general where someone or something was born with the intention that it's life would be to serve something else; Sex slaves, animals, or workers. And don't give me shit like "Well, at least they use the whole cow and don't just take the meat and leave the rest." Cattle raised for beef and those raised for skin are completely different.
I will, however, use previously used leather, since it's not creating a demand for the companies.
Satisfied?

I call bullshit on this one. Sounds like some typical vegan propaganda crap. Leather from a dog or cat wouldn't be NEARLY as thick or heavy as cow leather and wouldn't make very good boots. Cite a legit source.

You have no idea what you're talking about here, do you? Here's a little clue for you, biodegradability. Look it up and learn what it means if you're going to be bringing the concept up in discussion.
4) I'm against anything in general where someone or something was born with the intention that it's life would be to serve something else; Sex slaves, animals, or workers. You're an idiot. Domestic cattle are a man-made breed of animal....they were created by humanity FOR humanity. So actually, using a cow for meat/milk/leather is EXACTLY what it was born for.
I will, however, use previously used leather, since it's not creating a demand for the companies.

The global economy is what makes Chinese labor practices unfair, not us buying stuff from them. In fact the more work we throw their way, the better their labor standards will get. Simple supply and demand, try again.

Bullshit. I've owned more than a couple of vegan skate shoes, and they fall apart in half the time of leather. You're refering to a molecules half-life, which has fuck all to do with durability.

This whole thing is a bit hypocritical.
what i do depends on the circumstances.
If there is a pair of perfectly good, used leather boots, that will otherwise be thrown out, i'll salvage them. it's better than letting them lay in a landfill, and it does not create more demand for the skin. If i were to buy them new, that would be creating demand for the leather; something i do not want to do.

You could always use your boyfriend with the bad tattoo..he can hold the plastic store baggies on your feet as you walk. Get a hole in one, you got back up cause you recycle. No animals killed, your boyfriend makes penance for such a crap tattoo and you look stylish with CVS across your foot.
As for supply and demand in footwear...Bullshit. They make'em and will keep making them whether you buy them or not. Why? Because someone somewhere is going to buy them. Very rarely does a line of shoe go belly up, when they do now a days the line is either ripped apart and bits used for other shoes or they are given away to look good come tax time.
Now, go fetch your Whole Foods duffle bag with the plastic baggies in'em..your boyfriend is waiting.

I am, but my justification for used leather is this : It would show more respect for the animal to give the product a second life than to let it go unused and thrown away when the product still is usable. Of course, I wouldn't just say to a friend "Oh, you bought a new leather jacket and wore it twice? Can I buy it, so I can say it's used, and then you buy a new one?" I only use leather goods that would otherwise be thrown away, or that from thrift stores. Call me a hippie if you want, whatever. I see nothing wrong with what I'm doing.

Physically, I couldn't digest it, but if they had too much to store in a freezer, it'd probably go to a meat-eating friend.

quite often... but i can for sure see how you would make the connection. i don't hang out with any crusty/anracho/what-have-you vegans, but i know several that work out in the same gym i do who wear leather shoes and lifting belts. i hear what yer saying though... the originator of this post needs a good 4-7 lashes.
i also know a handful of vegans that shop at the health food store i do that eat honey, as honey is not an animal product, but a product made by animals.
i just came off a 6 month vegan kick myself, and wore my sambas and gripfasts all the time. i've done it before for years at a time, but maybe a 6 month time frame isn't enough to consider oneself vegan if one just goes back to consuming non-vegan food so quickly. whatever. i'm right. you're wrong. at least you're good lookin'...
