I'm looking to buy a car...

Anyone in the MA/RI/CT area selling one or know someone who is selling one? I'm looking to pay $2500-3000 cash on the spot, and I need one ASAP. Must be something that is going to last me, is in decent shape, doesn't have 200,000++++ miles, and will get me back and forth to work, etc.

Prefer: Honda, Toyota, Nissas, certain Ford models...Even a little pickup if its reliable and in good shape! Post here or PM me if you know of anything or anyone that might have something for sale!

Thanks. ;)

What can you get for $3000.00? You can try Carmax, but the lowest they had for Hartford was $6,599.00 (http://www.carmax.com/dyn/search/searchresults.aspx?newused=1&make=0&model=0&vehtype=0&locnum=7286&pr1=1&pr2=2&es=T&esx=0&zd=&m=39).

Im at the point that I'll take anything so long as its not going to blow up on me... I am going to go scour some more lemon lots tomorrow. :(

Be careful and make sure you run a carfax. Also, you may want to check with dealers to see if they have any shitty old trade ins that are going to auction.

You can always try e-bay motors....
Pre-90's Mercedes Diesels are fucking insane, and you will die before they do....you can get a semi-decent one with 125k-150K on it for $3kish... Keep in mind, you can run one of those things for 500,000 miles with minimal repair. I'm not a mechanic, but I see more of those things on the road than new cars....(alright...a little exageration...but,)
The only problem they seem to have is glow plug problems and rust...
And, those things include roadside assistance for the life of the car...

You'd be better off putting that kinda cash on as a down payment for something that's worth it.

Wow, for $3,000 Canadian you can get yourself a damn decent 1980's cutlass/monte carlo/regal type car. With a v6 they'r enot too bad on gas. And comfy as fuckin hell.

An old frind of mine just bought an 85 monte carlo ls with 80,000 kilometers off of an old lady for $2,500 canadian. The interior in near mint and the body is just as nice.

A $2500 car isn't going to be worth your time...

This is exactly what I was going to say, I have helped many of my family members and friends make good car purchases, if your credit is not good it just means that they want a little money down and that your interest rate may be a bit higher over the life of the loan.

Believe me, they WANT to sell you a car. Just make sure you do a little research on what type of car you want.

You can't ever go wrong with either a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic, total ticket price will be around $12-14K which will put your payments at around $275-300 on a 4 year loan with the down you have.

Much better plan than trying to get the best car you can for $2500 and hoping for that miracle deal.

And the fact that I cannot afford a payment every month... theyre going to just forget about the other 10 grand left over on the price of the car? :D

And the fact that I cannot afford a payment every month... theyre going to just forget about the other 10 grand left over on the price of the car? :D

Obviously you will have to make the monthly payments, but I've found that after financing two cars, that after making the payments for a while you don't even think about it, nor do you really think about that money as part of your monthly disposable income. It really does become automatic, almost like it's deducted from your check like payroll taxes.

So you work a few more hours or scare up some part time income, or cut back on a few of your monthly luxuries. To me it has always been worth it.

Basically, how much is dependable, long term, mechanical, problem free transport worth to you?

Also financing a car if managed right is a good credit builder, by showing you have a 3-4 year history of making payments and make sure your car dealer reports those payments to the credit agency, your credit score will greatly improve to the point that banks and credit issuers will compete to extend you credit at the lowest interest rate.

Just my .02 cents, I definitely know how it can get when money is real tight and it's hard to pay the bills.

Look in Auto Buys magazines. You can find lots of private sellers who just want cash for their shit. Try a repo place too. I got a 2 year old neon in perfect condition (until it got totalled) with only 20k on it for like 5gs. They sell their shit cheaaaaaaaaaaaaaap.

I've had 3 cars in the past 3 years, bought 2 and each time from a repo place. Just make sure you test drive that shit, because one guy wanted to sell me an Altima with a dead battery. Bastard.

Police auctions are hella cheap too.

I've got an '06 Ranger and it's the pimp diggity.

It's alright in the room catergory. I'm 6'3" and I fit in it just fine, although I feel sorry for whoever's riding in my jump seats in the back.

It can haul like a motherfucker. I got close to 2000 pounds of gravel in it last weekend, and aside from almost skimming my wheel wells, it was fine.

I get alright mileage out of it too. I get about 300 miles to the tank in the city, which comes out around 19 mpg, not bad when the sticker said 15 city...

If you can somehow conjour up $27,000, I'll sell it to you...:biggrin:

High mileage isn't nessecarily a bad thing. Engines are like shoes, they need time and mileage to break in.

But you probably want to keep it under 100k.

Yeah, this has... more than that.

Honestly, tho.. when I test drove it, I thought the thing had died in the parking lot the engine was so quiet. I had to put my ear almost to the dash to make sure it was still running. No funny noises, no leaks anywhere, and clean as a whistle.

In that case, like someone else said, get a Carfax report on it. You can either pay for it yourself, or sweet talk the dealer into paying for it. Have a good mechanic give it a once over too.

Haha well will be a while before I have to do all that... It doesn't need a damn thing. Just had new brakes, tires and clutch put on... damn thing is awesome.

Prob is now in RI you have to get a VIN inspection at the oinkoink station in order to transfer the registration, so now I have to take more time off from work in order to finish that... and I spent all morning this morning looking for my SS card, couldnt find it, then had to sit in the damn SS office for about 3 fucking hours waiting in line to get a new one. I have to get a temp reg to drive it down here and get the VIN inspection...

also if you want to get into shooting as a hobby by any chance i think its a hell of a lot easier/less expensive here than in mass (but i'm not positive on that).

Yeah, you know I have been talking about buying a gun like forever now, but I'm not sure if I'm legally able to own one due to past legal issues, i.e. pleading guilty to a felony.... :X I really haven't looked into it, tho.

In michigan you'd be able to buy a shotgun or rifle, but not a handgun. Not sure what the rules are there, though.

http://www.rilin.state.ri.us/Statutes/TITLE11/11-47/11-47-5.HTM

Specifically: (b) Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection (a) of this section, no person convicted of an offense punishable as a felony offense under § 12-29-5 shall purchase, own, carry, transport, or have in his or her possession any firearm, for a period of two (2) years following the date of that conviction. So it looks like as long as the conviction was more than 2 years ago, you're good to go.

Also check out http://www.packing.org/state/rhode_island/

That site covers pretty much anything you can think of in regards to weapons possession.

Well, I wasn't convicted, but I pled guilty... is that the same thing?

And the registration trip today was a bust. They're super picky down here about what they will accept for proof of residency (up to and including a mortgage statement and utility bills, none of which are in my name), so I have to wait till tomorrow to get my paycheck and bring that.

I swear these people are trying to kill me. I about burst a blood vessel in there today.

Yeah, admission of guilt and conviction of guilt are the same thing under the law.

Seems like it's a rule that anything to do with car registration/insurance/licensing has to be a pain in the ass.

I swear to god... at least the guy wasn't a total douche, and I was trying not to be an asshole to him... you know, the whole "kill the messenger" thing... He doesn't make the rules and I tried my best not to take it out on him. I just really want to get the fucking thing on the road already. :(
