I have used Macs for the last 18 years. I don't run and have never bought anti-virus, spam blockers, spy blockers, or any other kind of malware prevention software. I have checked over the years using scanning tool on extremely rare occasions just out of curiosity. I've never been infected, I've also never never had a system crash or failure. So, no, Macs don't need anti-virus, especially with the newer OS X platforms assuming you keep up to date on your security patches. They've only ever shown proof of concept on a few extremely rare and limited instances where there is a very slim chance of corruption. Nothing has ever been shown in the real world so to speak to my knowledge.

macs dont need anti-virus because people don't give a shit about writing viruses for macs. this is due to the fact that the ratio of mac users to pc users is about 5%.

I don't think that's the ONLY reason - I think it's because it's based off of FreeBSD - and the core group that supports the O/S has massaged it for years and years IN the hacking community - there are less holes - less buggy code - many more people testing it and it's Open Source before it becomes Mac proprietary production. So it's already tried and true - Microsoft releases their updates and it's immediatly hit - requiring patches and lots of back peddaling - You won't see that in the open source community - once it's gold, it's ready.

Plus you just can't write shit to take admin (root) rights and write access to a mac like you can with the simplistic secuirty permissions and default settings of a Windows O/S. Out of the box - they are TOTALLY different.

Yeah and if swifty would just do some googling he might have learned all this. And that was kinda my point when he PM'd me about this issue. SO next time dont ask a question if you dont like my answer.

The I.T. Corner We all know there is an inner Geek inside most of the Skinheads on this board - so this is the place to discuss Tech and Geeky shit!

the reason i asked on here as well as yourself.
the people who use macs, seem to know a bit more about where to find the right stuff for them, more so than a Google search.
