From the "proof that bureaucracy is universal and all things bureaucratic are connected" file, on the heels of Oklahoma legalizing tattooing, Tokyo cops are cracking down on piercers.
Piercing studio operator busted for working without medical license
The operator of a piercing studio and a woman living with him who pierced customers' ears and bodies without the required medical license have been arrested, police said.
Hiroyuki Suzuki, 45, and Manami Ito, 42, were arrested on suspicion of violating the Medical Practitioners Law. Piercing is regarded as a medical procedure in Japan, and is illegal unless it is performed by someone with a medical license.
Metropolitan Police Department officials said is was the first time for a piercing specialist to be arrested for violating the law.
Investigators said Suzuki operated the piercing studio "Paradox Angelique Marmalade," located in Tokyo's Shibuya-ku. He is specifically accused of piercing the ear and other body parts of a 19-year-old customer over four occasions between November last year and May this year without holding a medical license.
When the man's ear was pierced it continued to bleed, and he was taken to a hospital, which led to the studio operator's actions being uncovered. The business opened in December 2003, and since then has reportedly made about 235 million yen in earnings.
Piercing the human body with needles or other objects is deemed a medical activity, and is only legal if performed by a doctor. On the company's Web site, the company boasted of "excellent sanitary control." Piercing of ears, faces and other body parts was performed at a cost of between about 5,000 yen and 10,000 yen a time. Both suspects have reportedly admitted to the allegations against them. (Mainichi)
Now, granted, this guy was a scumbag and probably the worst piercer in Japan, and he probably DOES belong in jail for the shit he pulls, but for them to start charging people under this law sets a very very bad precedent - as the same law can also be used to charge tattooists.
For the time being I'm pulling the piercing section of my website and I'll stick to piercing people I know or who get referred by people I know.

Funny, over here you could be arrested for thinking about tattoos, but there are piercing shops everywhere filled with young schoolgirls who decide their bodies need more holes.

Law's been on the books for decades - the Medical Practicioner's Law was written by doctors - they just never bothered enforcing it before. Ever.
This fuckwit's got so many complaints against him, when he finally directly put someone in the hospital (check for blood vessels, ask clients if they have bleeding disorders or ar taking blood thinners or aspirin, and keep chemical coagulant on hand to make artificial clots if necessary - not fucking rocket science here) he got arrested - and in so doing has finally had this law enforced.
Which means the cops will likely see it as an opportunity to enforce it again.
Stupid fucker.

Actually, there's a reason for the name of the shop...
The premises was originally occupied by a studio called Paradox run by Eizo Mamiya - the "godfather" of piercing and body mods in Japan, kind of the local Steve Haworth. Suzuki was one of his apprentices back in the day.
When Eizo moved to his new (nicer) premises, Suzuki moved into the old one and took over the shop - calling it Paradox, hoping that people would come in thinking it was the same shop.
When he found out he couldn't register the business with that name (because Eizo was using it in the same ward at the new location) Suzuki added the "Angelique Marmalade" - the names of a couple of anime characters that were on his GF's t-shirt that day.
Eizo renamed his shop to Noon, for years he had a huge rant about Suzuki up on his website and on the wall of his shop.

Are Japanese doctors willing to do piercings? Especially once you get into the more "extreme" kind?
I doubt the doctors we have here would even consider wasting a minute on that.

The "clinics" that do piercings here don't tend to do the more extreme ones - and the ones they do, they do badly. They use straight barbells on navels and eyebrows, and everything is done with piercing guns or "stapler" type jewelry.
They suck. Badly.

Over here there are licenced cosmetic tattoo artists who mostly give women permanent tattoo makeup. Tattooed-on eyebrows, maybe blush, even lipstick. It's pretty fucked up. One of my friends convinced one to write 군인 on his shoulder.

There's a couple of beauty shops in Chinatown that do cosmetc tattooing...scary stuff. getting tattooed eyeliner can make a simple MRI turn into a medical emergency.

Dude, i keep hearing this shit and i just had an MRI a couple of months ago. I have a few tattoos. Most of them are all black or have a lot of it. Black is the color of tattoo ink that supposedly has the most metal (is it iron?) in it. My shit didn't get so much as warm.
Plus, Mythbusters tested it on a show. Nothing happened. A little interference with the clarity of the pictures, but that was it.

Ive been thinking about doing it for years but havent actually met anyone who has had it done......
ON a related note:
My Gran was telling me how she had her Doctor pierce her ears (back in the 40s) as you couldnt just go somewhere to do it and it kinda tripped me out thinking how, back then,Doctors werent so busy that could pierce ears(imagine getting that done now?)and its unbelivable that,in theory, thats how its supposed to still be in Japan.......

It has to be a circumferential tattoo...so a solid armband will burn but a simple tatt won't. There has to be a complete circut. My uncle was one of the radiologists who first had it happen. they were doing an MRI on a football player with a tribal armband and the guy suddenly started screaming and ended up with second/third degree burns.

That must have happened a while ago - almost nobody manufactures inks with ferrous metals in them anymore.
Unless your ink is more than 20 years old, you shouldn't have problems with MRI scans at all.
