I recently upgraded to AVG 8.0 and keep getting a message saying my email scanner is turned off.
how can I turn it back on?

ON the over view screen open the Email scanner and make sure all your Email scanner settings are checked on.
Then update the program.

Yeah try avast.. it will cause your system to run like its a P1 166 with MMX and 32 megs of ram.
Try reinstalling the program and see if that helps.

I'd suggest nod32 personally...but I do use avast and have had zero problems with that....full HD scans take forever, but I never scan my hard drive when I need it - that would just be stupid.

if you REALLY want to be secure - run CoreTrace Bouncer - http://www.coretrace.com/products/
you tell it what is ALLOWED to run - and anything else that TRIES to run gets stopped in it's tracks (White listing). Of course it takes a bit more work, but this is the number one way to prevent crap from installing and running on your system. Proventia Desktop does the same - Bouncer was run at DefCon (hacking convention) with 100% success rate over ALL the big A/V companies - closest coverage was like 67% from one of the major antivirus companies.
