At the risk of giving them more publicity, we can say it was of great concern to hear of a neo-Nazi event held near Madrid last Saturday. The event, held on an industrial estate in Guadalajara, saw a skinhead collective called Unidad Skinhead, set up a festival called Iberian Fest. The neo-nazi event saw musical groups such as Brutal Attack on stage. Brutal Attack are linked to the British neo-Nazi organisation Blood and Honour whose Spanish branch was officially broken up by the Guardia Civil back in April 2005. It’s reported in El Pais that about 150 skinheads attended the concert, most from Madrid and the Castilla y León region, but numbers here are no indicative as, because of the nature of the event, it had to be organised in secret via webpages and Internet forums. A poster for the event was published on the British Blood and Honour webpage, which is a very scary site. Back in Spain and following the event Anti-racialism groups are now calling on the Government for a greater control over neo-Nazi groups and events in Spain. They want to see a ban on such events. Esteban Ibarra, President of the Movement against Intolerance, said that at such concerts racial hatred is promoted and the youngsters attending are brainwashed with the ideas of the extreme right. The Spanish security services limit their activity to asking to see the identification of those who attend. Ibarra has now met with the Government Sub Delegate in Madrid, Soledad Mestre, calling for more action and a more rigorous application of article 510 of the Penal Code, which says prison terms of 1-3 years can be awarded for those who incite racial violence or hatred. We now wait for the Zapatero government to act on this one.
