I think I actually saw a real one on discovery one time, I think it was designed by the US army but has never been taken into use because it didn't prove itself usefull.

They've been around since the 60's, actually ...and not a whole lot different than the one you've just seen. The problem is that the propellant they use is only good for about 30 seconds of use, and much of it is used to slow your ass down at the end so you don't crash into the ground.
