Anyone else here like classical music? If so, what's your favorite composer?

I've been into Bach, holst, and mussorgsky as of late.

How can anybody who appreciates good music *not* like classical? Seriously.

Mozart will rule always. Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Tchaichovsky, Handel...hells yeah.

mostly it bores me but there are a few pieces of russian stuff that i really like, rachmaninov in particular

don't know enough about music theory and all that to really appreciate the majority of it i guess

You don't have to know shit about theory to appreciate music.

I've been classically trained on piano since i was 5....and i still love to pull out the piano books and play Franz Liszt ( you need enormous hands to play Liszt ), Mozart, Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, and ...though he won't be really included in the annals of 'Classical music' at this time, Scott Joplin ragtime stuff.

most pieces dont do a thing for me, but moonlight sonata is a great song.

Definately, Both mazart and list had fuckin huge hands. Mozart could do an octive and a fifth if I remember correctly, couldn't he?

I'll sort of disagree about this.... i'll state that there is a level of appreciation for something that you gain only after you've been trained in music theory.

How can i explain .... it's kind of like Family Guy or Simpsons, right? It's a funny show, and just about everyone can sit down and laugh at it .... HOWEVER there are references made in both of those shows ....pop culture references, references to other episodes ...jokes about commercials or tv shows or whatever .......and you likely won't get every joke on the show unless you understand these ( often obscure ) references.

I majored in Jazz Performance in college for a while, and it really became apparent ( particularly in jazz ) how much OTHER jazz you have to know .... because many artists will pay homage to other jazz standards by including little riffs in their improvisational solos or whatever. You would never pick those up unless you knew the other tune as well.

So, my point is that you'll always derive satisfaction and enjoyment from your appreciation of these types of music, but you might not be aware that there's a whole level you don't really get to appreciate until you're trained.

yeah you're right, guess the point i was making was that if i had more of an academic background i might appreciate more of it than i do (as i only like a little of it)

I guess I was saying it in a more general reference. Though yes, i played jazz trumpet for 8 years. And I do know what you mean about using riffs from songs in improv.

Lately i've been listening to a lot of bachs organ works. Do you like them?

I used to play a lot of the Toccata and Fugue kinda stuff.... but it's like a whole different ballgame between me playing it on the piano and some fucker playing it on some massive pipe organ with 4 manuals, 2 sets of pedal manuals, and full pull-stops and everything. It's equivelent to me playing eddie van halen riffs on a uekelele.

I have a whole bunch of Pipe Organ stuff on Vinyl, but i'll admit i really enjoy PLAYING classical rather than listening to it.

Yeah, I got to play toccata and fugue on the local colleges pipe organ a few times. Definately a lot of fun. I think it has 1600 pipes on it. It's massive and a lot of fun. Did you play organ for a bit or something?

Holy crap, that must be something else. Earthshaking stuff.

Me, I played viola in a string orchestra back in school (I know, I know...viola, the redheaded stepchild of the orchestra) so I'll agree that playing the stuff is more fun than listening to it. Still great stuff to listen to tho.

I owned a 1939 Hammond BC for a while...2 manuals, 2 tone generators, and a full 2 octave pedal board... but it's not quite the same thing, now is it? Never played on a full pipe setup.

I don't know about earthshaking, but you definately feel powerful for some stange reason. If you've never seen a large pipe organ played live, i'd recomend seeing it. Well worth it.

You're going to have to narrow it down, ponch. What's the subject of the opera ? That might help....

I would bet that's it. On a skinhead site ...talking about classical music...it's all about Wagner ( pronounced VAhg-ner, for you schleprocks) ..... Ride of the Valkyries and a bunch of other great stuff that Hitler adored.

God damnit ...i have a really ...really ....REALLY old record that i'm looking for and can't find right now because i'm drunk. "Hitler's Favorite Marches" ... it's got swastikas and shit all over it .... pressing of 1939 or 1940 ...fucking unbelieveable that i've got this record. It feels weird just to look at it. I'll scan it and upload it because it's nothing but Wagner marches.

classic music is okay, but by and large i only like the shameless climaxes of the pieces. I enjoy Tchaikovsky's overture of 1812 and pachelbel's canon in d minor, but really, i only enjoy 3-4 minute segments greatly.

i bought a vinyl that has all the exciting parts of the classic pieces, all of the most influential parts, and i dig it a lot, but i am not going to sit through a 40 minute piece just to hear a climax for four-five minutes.

I love the shit, I can get into it. I preffer the more intense shit that gets you pumped. I also like Bach. He's got this old organ moody dark brooding shit that I can get into. But still some of the most intense shit is Beetoven. The guy got intense. I also love danny elfman. He did some bad ass shit, but that's not classical, just orchestra shit.

Wagner is fucking great. I have to bring up Apocalypse Now. Fucking great scene.

I thought about framing it and putting it up on the way for historical reasons, but then i thought people might find it off-putting that i've got a big swazi framed on the wall. I'll find it after work and scan or take a pic of the front and back of it.

Where did i find it? My uncle gave it to me. No idea where he found it.

I have been playing classical piano since I could reach the keyboard. Played as a soloist with the Southeastern Philharmonic when I was in high school. Unfortunately I am still trying to save up the money to pay a piano mover to get my piano from my parents house in Mass to my house in RI. Fucking pricey... then with tuning on top of that... going to run me at least a few hundred dollars. Damn thing is an antique so I have to actually have it crated before I can have it shipped.

Anyhow...

Id say my favorite to listen to would be Lizst, Bergmuller, and Vivaldi.

To play, Id say it would have to be Mozart, Bartok and Chopin.

I have a whole bunch of vintage keyboards, synths, organs, etc... i collect them. ( i play the Fender Rhodes piano the most, i think ) ..

But i made a promise to myself over a decade ago that i would get a regular old piano again when i had children. When i was little, my father would put me to sleep by playing Scott Joplin tunes.... and it's probably my favorite memory of growing up - my father putting me tucking me in and then hearing him go downstairs, pour himself a drink, and then play until late at night. I'd like to do the same for my children when i opt to have a few.

They are crazy expensive. My nana's moving and was going to throw the piano she has that I learned on. I had my mom move it to her house for the time being until I have a home with a little more room to put it in, emotional attachment beyond anything else haha.

Hahaha thats exactly where mine came from!

When I was little we lived downstairs in a converted apt from my grandparents... and I learned on my grammas piano. When they moved to Florida, they were going to get rid of it, and I said HELL NO, and have been trucking it around with me like forever. That thing has been to Cali, Hawaii... you name it. Every time I moved in the military they paid to ship all my shit, so why not?
